Abstract 란 무엇인가?

한글로는 초록이라고 하는데, 의미를 검색해보니

  • 어떤 문장에서, 필요한 것만 뽑아내어 기록하는 일. 또는, 그렇게 기록한 것.

으로 설명되어 있다. 초록이 들어가는 글은, 학회 포스터, 학술 논문, 학위 논문 등 다양하지만, 이번에는 학술 논문 (Journal paper) 에 맞추어서 설명을 하고자 한다. 시작하기에 앞서, 본 내용은 Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems 에서 진행된 Dr. Deborah Bennett 씨의 writing workshop 의 내용 일부를 발췌한 것임을 미리 밝혀둔다.1

또한, Science Advances 에서 무작위로 뽑은 논문의 abstract가 아래의 법칙을 어떻게 잘 따르는지 예시로 넣어 두었다.

1. Background (1 - 3 문장)

이 논문의 분야에서 일반적으로 논의가 있는지, 또는 어떤 기술이 있는지 설명한다.

  • In engineering, the “softness” of an object, as measured by an indenter, manifests as two measurable parameters: (i) indentation depth and (ii) contact area.
  • For humans, softness is not well defined, although it is believed that perception depends on the same two parameters.
    • 윗 문장은 사실 문제점으로 봐도 무방하지만, “softness”에 대한 engineering 적 관점과 perception 적 관점이 다르다는 측면에서 백그라운드에 넣었다.

2. Gap in existing knowledge / motivation / real world problem (1 문장)

논문의 연구가 어떤 문제 때문에 시작되었는지 설명을 먼저 해주어야 한다. 아래 예시를 보자.

  • Decoupling their relative contributions, however, has not been straightforward because most bulk—“off-the-shelf”—materials exhibit the same ratio between the indentation depth and contact area.
    • 문제점은 (i) 과 (ii)의 분리가 쉽지 않다는 것을 명시하고 있다.

3. Contribution / Key focus (1 문장)

그래서 “우리는 무엇 무엇을 했습니다!” 라고 한 문장으로 간결하게 요약 해 주자.

  • Here, we decoupled indentation depth and contact area by fabricating elastomeric slabs with precise thicknesses and microstructured surfaces.
    • 2번의 문제점을 완벽하게 해결 해 주는 문장임을 알 수 있다.

4. Key steps of approach / findings (2 - 4 문장)

3번을 알기 위해서 어떤 노력을 했는지에 대한 실험 과정을 설명한다.

  • Human subject experiments using two-alternative forced-choice and magnitude estimation tests showed that the indentation depth and contact area contributed independently to perceived softness.
  • We found an explicit relationship between the perceived softness of an object and its geometric properties.

5. Value / implications (1 - 2 문장)

이 논문이 어떤 점을 시사하는지 간략하게 쓴다.

  • Using this approach, it is possible to design objects for human interaction with a desired level of perceived softness.

Abstract 의 적절한 길이는?

Journal (학술지) 마다 요구하는 word limit 이 정해져 있으니 기본적으로는 그것을 참고하면 되지만, 일반적으로 150 ~ 200 words 정도가 적당하다고 한다.

결론

잘 쓴 논문의 대부분은 위와 같은 흐름으로 abstract가 작성된다고 보면 된다. 그 근거로 아무 논문을 가져와 위의 제시된 흐름대로 나눠봤는데, 잘 나눠지는 것을 볼 수 있다.
