이럴땐 in 이 아니라 at 을 써야 해!

한국인들에게 전치사는 참 어려운 문법 요소중의 하나이며, 자세히 배우지도 않는다. 과연 고등학교 영어 선생님들 중에서 전치사의 용법을 완벽하게 아는 사람이 얼마나 될까. 나도 여전히 애매한 경우가 많고, 심지어 교수님도 왜 in 이 아니라 at 이어야 하는지 제대로 설명을 못 해 주신다.

어려운 건 둘째치고 한국인들은 거의 안쓰지만 알고나면 간단하고 효과적인 영작이 가능한 전치사가 있다. 아래의 문장을 영작해보자.

  • 코로나 바이러스가 전세계에 급격히 밀려들고 있다. (surge)

일반적인 한국인이라면 아래와 같이 영작할 것이다.

  • Corona virus is surging all around the world.
  • Corona virus is surging in the world.

하지만 across 를 써보자.

  • Corona virus has surged across the world.1

어떤 느낌이 드는가? 바이러스가 전세계에 걸쳐 구석구석 침투한 느낌이 들지 않는가?

2. Across 의 사전적 의미

공부를 하다보니 두가지 의미가 있다고 한다.2

  • On the other side of something (어떤 것의 다른면, 건너편, 반대면)
  • from one side to the other of something (가로지르는 느낌)

3. 두가지 용법과 예시

또한 전치사 말고도 부사로도 쓰인다고 한다. 다음은 across 를 활용한 문장의 예이다.

  • The bus stop is across from the entrance of the school.
    • 버스 정류장은 학교 정문 건너편에 있다. (across는 부사로 쓰임)
  • 31 bridges has been built across Han river.
    • 31개의 다리가 한강을 가로질러 세워졌다. (across는 전치사로 쓰임)
