1. In front of 의 남용

고등학생 시절, 이 구문을 거의 외우다시피 했고 그 이후로는 큰 비판없이 써왔다. 문제는 정작 라이팅을 하려고 하면 이 구문밖에 생각이 나지 않는다는 것이다. 라이팅이라는 것은 상대방이 내 글을 읽고 나의 상상과 비슷한 상상이 되도록 그려줘야 하는데, 이 단순한 구문으로는 표현에 한계가 있다. 이것과 비슷한 대표적인 표현이 ahead of 인데, 둘 사이에는 미묘한 차이가 있으므로 이번 기회에 정리하고 넘어가자.

2. 어떤 것을 써도 무방한 경우

  • 공간상의 위치를 나타내기 위해서 사용되는 경우 (When referring to position in space)1
    • The brass band marched ahead of the football team.
    • The brass band marched in front of football team.
  • 미묘한 치이가 있다면, in front of 는 바로 앞에 있는 경우이며, ahead of 는 앞에 있으나 얼마나 앞에 있는지에 관해서는 표현하지 않음.

3. Ahead of 의 용법

  • 추상적이며, 질적인 표현일 경우
    • Einstein was ahead of all his contemporaries.
    • An extended winter lockdown has shaken the usual arrangement between landlords and tenants ahead of a government review of leasing legislation 2.
  • 항상 시간적인 앞섬을 표현할 경우 (in front of 는 사용 불가)
    • The flight from Toronto arrived ahead of the one from Vancouver.
    • Mon always got up ahead of us kids.
    • … to not just measure slip, but to predict slip ahead of time 3…
